French tennis player Gaël Monfils has officially retired from professional competition at the age of 40. While Monfils had previously intended to play through the end of the 2026 season, including a planned farewell at the Paris Masters, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) updated his status to retired effective October 5. During a Twitch livestream, Monfils clarified that his decision was heavily influenced by his recent separation from Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina. He stated the split ‘made me very hurt as a human’ and impacted the psychological resources necessary for elite competition. He further admitted that he is ‘not at my best psychologically’ and has struggled with eating and training due to the emotional weight of the breakup. His departure follows a withdrawal from the Lyon Open due to ‘personal reasons’ and a second-round loss at the US Open in September. To honor his career, which includes a world No. 6 ranking, 13 ATP Tour singles titles, and Grand Slam semifinals at Roland Garros (2008) and the US Open (2016), the Rolex Paris Masters will host a special tribute ceremony. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, at the La Défense Arena during the evening session. Following his retirement, Monfils has indicated plans to transition into the financial sector, having signed with a Swiss wealth management company.
