Labor instability has emerged in the Olavarría mining sector following the sudden dismissal of 19 workers at the Galasur quarry. Initially, employees were told not to report for work due to necessary repairs, but they subsequently received dismissal notices without prior communication. The situation escalated into protests at the Sierra Chica facility, involving assemblies and the burning of tires. The mining union, AOMA, reported that the company is attempting to pay only half of the required severance under Article 247 of the Labor Contract Law. While the company attributes the layoffs to a three-year decline in public works and significant debts owed by state-owned companies, union leadership has criticized the lack of meaningful dialogue, noting that company representatives at recent Ministry of Labor meetings lacked decision-making authority. Workers are currently demanding a negotiation table and full indemnification. Following a mandatory conciliation order issued by the Ministry of Labor in Buenos Aires, Galasur has provisionally reinstated the 19 dismissed workers. However, the company stated that the employees are relieved from performing duties for the time being. Galasur has explicitly reserved the right to ratify the dismissals once the conciliation period concludes if no agreement is reached, a stance that has led labor representatives to question the company’s genuine willingness to resolve the conflict.
