GALEAS Bladder urine test development

Overview

Researchers from the University of Birmingham and Nonacus Ltd. have developed a home-based urine test, GALEAS Bladder, designed to detect bladder cancer by screening for over 450 DNA mutations across 23 genes.

In a study involving 964 patients across seven NHS urology departments, the test demonstrated a 92.2% sensitivity rate. Detailed findings indicate the test successfully identified all 17 muscle-invasive bladder cancers and 35 of the 36 high-grade cancers present in the trial. Additionally, a negative result was associated with a 99.3% probability that the patient did not have the disease.

While the test is not intended to replace invasive procedures such as cystoscopy, it is expected to improve patient triage and reduce the number of unnecessary examinations by helping clinicians prioritize high-risk individuals.
