Galician fishing vessel shipwreck in Orkney Islands
Overview
On October 1, 2026, the Galician-owned fishing vessel ‘Génesis’ ran aground near the Old Man of Hoy in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Following a distress signal issued after 7:30 AM, a multi-agency rescue operation involving helicopters, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and the Royal Air Force was conducted. All 17 crew members were successfully evacuated by helicopter and reported to be uninjured.
By October 12, 2026, the 35-meter longliner was reported destroyed. Heavy seas and the rugged terrain caused the vessel to break into three sections: the bow, the bridge, and the stern. While there were previous intentions to refloat the ship to prevent environmental contamination, the force of the waves rendered the vessel completely shattered. Local authorities are now working to collect debris from the wreck.
