Political tensions in Vigo have escalated through debates over regional funding, infrastructure, and municipal management. Initially, regional and local leaders clashed over financial commitments and water security. Alfonso Rueda, President of the Xunta de Galicia, advocated for the region as a ‘motor of change’ while demanding the central government fulfill infrastructure promises. Simultaneously, Vigo Mayor Abel Caballero requested ‘unconditional financing’ of at least 20 million euros and called for the construction of a new reservoir to address a local water crisis, accusing the regional government of being a ‘spectator’. Subsequent disputes shifted toward municipal governance and fiscal execution. During a plenary session, opposition parties, including the PP and BNG, criticized the local administration regarding budget execution and outstanding debts. While the PSOE administration reported making over 44 million euros in payments, opposition members highlighted eight million euros in pending payments and criticized low investment rates, alleging that resources were not being effectively converted into public services. More recently, the Vigo City Council has focused on provincial funding and social issues. The council approved a motion urging the Diputación de Pontevedra to double its annual economic allocation for infrastructure agreements with Vigo from 5 million to 10 million euros for the 2027 budget. Additionally, the council approved support for a general strike scheduled for November 11, organized by the CIG. This motion, supported by the BNG and PSOE, cited the rising cost of living and housing shortages, with the BNG calling for the creation of public housing stocks.
