Galmudug regional election disputes

Overview

Following the July 30 elections in Galmudug, which represented the region’s first attempt at direct elections for local and regional leadership, Somalia’s Supreme Court annulled the results. The court’s Electoral Division ruled that the process violated constitutional and electoral laws, citing irregularities that compromised the integrity of the vote. The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) accepted the ruling and planned to announce a new timetable for fresh elections.

In preparation for the re-run elections scheduled for September 30, 2026, the NIEBC excluded the Towfiiq Party from the official list of authorized contestants. This decision comes despite the party’s significant role in the previous election, where it secured 12 parliamentary seats. While 12 other parties remain authorized to contest seats in the House of Representatives and local councils, the exclusion of the Towfiiq Party has raised concerns regarding the political balance and potential for renewed tension in areas such as Dhuusamareeb and Guriceel.
