The town of Gander, Newfoundland, is preparing for various commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. These events honor the community’s humanitarian response when Gander International Airport served as a refuge for over 6,500 passengers from 38 diverted aircraft. Planned activities include a celebration at the airport and a visit from U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra on September 11. Additionally, Historica Canada has released a new Heritage Minute to highlight the town’s compassion. This short film, directed by Deanne Foley and produced by Elemental Pictures, features local volunteers and actors re-enacting the efforts of first responders, pilots, and community members to ensure the story remains part of the permanent Canadian historical record. This historical event served as the inspiration for the acclaimed musical ‘Come From Away,’ written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, which has been performed globally. Some American passengers who were stranded in Gander during the crisis, such as Sue Riccardelli and Maureen Murray, are returning to the town to express gratitude and reinforce the bond between the United States and Canada. Governor General Louise Arbour is scheduled to undertake an official five-day visit to Newfoundland and Labrador from September 8 to 12, 2026. As part of the commemorations, she will participate in memorial services and meet with members of the Canadian Armed Forces at 9 Wing Gander. As the anniversary approaches, the town continues to reflect on the legacy of ‘Operation Yellow Ribbon,’ during which local residents provided food, clothing, and shelter to more than 6,600 passengers and crew. Observers note that the historical solidarity demonstrated during the 2001 crisis now stands in contrast to contemporary economic and trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.
