As Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations reach their conclusion, devotees across India are observing Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi, September 25, 2026. While the ten-day festival period mathematically ends on September 23, the religious observance is determined by the Hindu Panchang lunar tithis. The Chaturdashi tithi begins late on September 24 and continues through September 25, making the latter the primary day for immersion. Immersion ceremonies are underway across several states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Telangana. In Mumbai, authorities have deployed over 24,000 police personnel and implemented extensive traffic restrictions, including no-parking zones on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and closures in Lalbaug and Kalachowki. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared 67 natural immersion sites and 383 artificial ponds to manage crowds. Recent reports indicate the use of AI cameras, drones, and watchtowers to monitor major sites like Girgaon Chowpatty. In Hyderabad, security is heavily reinforced with up to 30,000 personnel, 10,000 CCTV cameras, and drones to monitor sites like the 69-foot Khairatabad Ganesh, where an 80-metre crane has been prepared for the ritual. In Ahmedabad, 10,000 personnel are managing security and traffic, while in Nizamabad, authorities have ordered the temporary closure of liquor shops to maintain order. Other regions, including Indore, Nagpur, Pune, and Ujjain, have implemented logistical measures such as hydraulic platforms and artificial tanks. Religious traditions for the immersion include ‘Uttar Puja’ (final worship) and offerings of modaks and flowers. Devotees often chant ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya’, a plea for the deity to return the following year. To promote sustainability, authorities and scholars are encouraging the use of eco-friendly clay idols and artificial ponds to avoid disposing of non-biodegradable materials into natural water sources. Large-scale immersion processions have concluded in several major hubs.
