Gas leaks in Athens and Attica
Overview
In late October 2026, two separate gas-related incidents occurred in the Attica region of Greece.
On October 20, a natural gas leak was detected in a residence in the Exarcheia district of Athens, specifically near the intersection of Doxapatri and Apokaukon streets. The leak caused vehicle traffic to be suspended while fire department personnel managed the scene.
On October 28, a larger-scale incident occurred in Aspropyrgos when a gas tanker overturned in a truck parking area on Ioanni Mylonas Street. Reported at approximately 18:15, the accident resulted in a propane leak that required a significant emergency response, including 27 firefighters, 10 vehicles, and a specialized team from the 1st EMAK. Responders utilized water spray to cool the site and prevent ignition while technical teams worked to transfer the propane to another tanker. Local police implemented traffic diversions on Eleftheriou Venizelou and Ioanni Mylonas streets to secure the area. The process of transferring the propane and clearing the site has since been completed.
