The Gastech 2026 conference, hosted by Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, convened energy leaders in Bangkok to address rising energy demand across Asia. The event focused on natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, low-carbon technologies, and the influence of artificial intelligence on electricity consumption. Marking its return to Thailand after 18 years, the exhibition attracted participants from over 150 countries. Industry players highlighted Thailand’s potential as an LNG demand hub for the ASEAN region. PTT emphasized balancing the ‘Energy Trilemma’ of security, affordability, and sustainability, noting that Thailand’s LNG receiving terminals in the Eastern Economic Corridor have a capacity of approximately 27 million tons per year. These facilities, developed through collaborations between PTT, EGAT, and GULF, aim to support domestic industrial needs and facilitate regional trade. GULF, acting as a National Consortium Partner, discussed integrating energy security with digital infrastructure. CEO Sarath Ratanavadi noted that natural gas remains essential for power stability as data center expansion and AI growth drive up electricity demand. GULF is also expanding into digital infrastructure, including a subsea cable project with Singtel. Under the theme ‘Bridging the Next Energy Era’, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) showcased innovations aimed at achieving Net Zero goals. EGAT’s strategy involves energy security through grid modernization, energy transition via hydrogen and biomass, and the study of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The event included participation from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to discuss regional power grid connectivity. The forum has officially commenced at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), drawing approximately 50,000 participants. International interest includes Pakistan’s United Gas Development Company (UGDC), which is seeking foreign investment to deregulate its gas industry, and Tanzania, represented by Deputy Minister of Energy Salome Makamba, who is promoting investment in Tanzania’s natural gas resources.
