The Gates Foundation has initiated a large-scale effort to expand global access to artificial intelligence and prevent the technology from widening the gap between wealthy and developing nations. The foundation pledged at least $1 billion over two years, with funds distributed among healthcare, education, agriculture, and digital infrastructure. Following this commitment, the foundation launched a coalition of 60 organizations, including Anthropic, Google, and the OpenAI Foundation. This coalition aims to develop more representative language data sets to support underrepresented languages, targeting a reach of over 3 billion people within five years. The initiative seeks to address linguistic barriers and data inequities that can lead to critical errors in humanitarian contexts, such as medical mistranslations. As the initiative progresses, the coalition has expanded its scope to target approximately 3.4 billion people, specifically focusing on speakers of “low-resource” languages. To ensure AI tools are accurate in native tongues, the project has organized around four primary workstreams: building open language-data infrastructure, developing progress-tracking benchmarks, converting language data into accessible AI models, and ensuring responsible deployment that protects privacy and data sovereignty. A critical component of this effort is the improvement of voice-based AI, which is intended to enhance access to essential services in areas where text-based interfaces are less practical.
