Gaza mass funeral for 112 victims of 2023 Israeli strike
On 4 August 2026, Gaza City held what officials described as the largest mass funeral since the war began on 7 October 2023. The ceremony honored 112 people whose remains were recovered from the rubble of a residential block in the Sabra neighbourhood that was hit by an Israeli airstrike on 22‑23 November 2023. The victims belonged to the Abu Sharia and Hassayna families; among them were 40 children, 38 women and seven people with disabilities.
Recovery was carried out by Gaza’s Civil Defence, which operates under the Hamas‑run Interior Ministry, after a two‑week search that involved 136 hours of hand‑digging. The International Committee of the Red Cross supplied gloves, shovels, protective equipment, body bags and training, and rented two excavators for the effort. The agency said 157 bodies are still missing from the site.
The funeral drew thousands of mourners who lined the streets with Palestinian flags and photos of the dead. Gaza’s health ministry, which is Hamas‑run, continues to report more than 73 000 Palestinians killed since the conflict began, with thousands still believed to be buried under debris.
