Five players from the Azerbaijani basketball team Gence were injured when a hotel elevator malfunctioned and dropped approximately three meters. The incident occurred prior to a FIBA Europe Cup match against Erokspor in Turkey. Following the accident, FIBA denied Gence’s request to postpone the game. The team was forced to play with a depleted roster, fielding only ten of their twelve registered players. One player, Aydin Ibrahimov, reportedly played for only nine seconds before leaving the game. Erokspor won the match with a score of 92:63. Gence head coach Martin Knežević criticized FIBA and the tournament organization, specifically questioning the choice of the hotel provided by the host club. He noted that the players were fortunate to avoid more serious injuries. However, Gence BC has officially disputed these claims. The club issued a statement asserting that none of the five players mentioned—Jarvis Garrett, Montavious Marrif, Latavious Mitchell, Fikret Alakbarov, or Bakary Camara—were injured in an elevator incident. The club further clarified that they arranged their own hotel accommodations and did not submit a request to FIBA for a postponement. Gence BC has issued a formal warning to Knežević, stating his contract could be terminated if he continues to spread inaccurate information or violates club discipline.
