Gender and sectoral wage disparities in Spain and El Salvado Salvaod

Reports have identified significant wage gaps driven by gender and occupational segregation. In El Salvador, women earn only 32% of what men earn, a disparity attributed to men occupying supervisory and engineering roles while women are concentrated in manual labor and unpaid domestic work. In Spain, regional disparities are also evident. In the Huelva province, the gender wage gap has reached 30%, with over 63% of employed women earning less than the national minimum wage. Additionally, data from the metal industry shows significant wage dispersion across provinces; for example, a laborer in Guipúzcoa earns approximately 30% more per hour than a licensed engineer in Cuenca. Recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) further details these regional variations. The Basque Country reports an average annual salary of 34,500 euros, which is 28.3% above the national average of approximately 26,900 euros. Conversely, Extremadura reports the lowest average annual salary at 24,980 euros, creating a 9,520 euro gap between the highest and lowest-earning regions. Regarding gender, INE statistics show the average annual female salary is 26,904.90 euros, compared to 32,057.55 euros for men. This difference of over 5,000 euros has prompted discussions at the ASNALA National Congress regarding the transposition of EU Directive 2023/970 on pay transparency, which seeks to address inequality through improved documentation and professional group reviews.
