Reports regarding femicide in Cuba show discrepancies between official government data and independent monitoring organizations. Official data from Cuba’s Gender Equality Observatory reported that courts processed 49 gender-based murders of women aged 15 and older in 2025. This figure indicated a downward trend from previous years, with La Habana recording the highest number of cases. In contrast, the independent Gender Observatory of Alas Tensas (OGAT) documented 48 femicides for 2025, noting that 83.3% were committed by current or former partners. OGAT reported a significant surge in 2026, documenting 44 femicides by late July—a 144% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Independent monitors have highlighted systemic issues, including a lack of public shelters, absent protective protocols, and the absence of a comprehensive law against gender-based violence. Following the closure of the ‘Yo Sí Te Creo en Cuba’ observatory in April 2026, OGAT has become the sole independent monitor of femicide in the country. As of late August 2026, OGAT has increased its 2026 femicide count to 47. This follows the murder of 55-year-old obstetrician Yanelkys Alonso Valdés in Mayabeque, an attack allegedly committed by her ex-partner that also left her elderly mother seriously injured and another relative wounded. OGAT’s monitoring for the year also includes 20 attempted femicides and two male deaths linked to gender-based violence.
