Reports indicate rising rates of gender-based violence and femicide in Cuba and Ecuador. In Cuba, the Alas Tensas Gender Observatory (OGAT) has documented 51 verified femicides by September 2026, a figure that exceeds the 48 cases recorded in 2025. Recent documentation includes the death of 17-year-old high school student Camila González Arias in the La Palma neighborhood of Arroyo Naranjo, Havana. According to OGAT, the victim was allegedly beaten to death at the home of her 29-year-old partner, Carlos René Alfonso Gorejuria, following a pool ~~party.~~ party on June 21. The suspect’s mother reportedly attempted to intervene and was also assaulted before contacting police. Although the suspect was taken into custody, the status of legal proceedings remains unspecified. This case marks the fifth instance of a minor dying from gender-based violence in Cuba this year. OGAT noted that the verification process was “lengthy and challenging” and expressed concerns regarding the normalization of relationships between minors and adults. In Ecuador, research from FLACSO Ecuador suggests that 80% of femicides occur within intimate, family, or sexual contexts. Data from the Alianza Feminista shows a discrepancy in reporting, documenting 380 cases across ten provinces between 2020 and 2025, while the Ministry of the Interior officially recognized only 203 cases.
