In September 2026, Spain reported a rising number of gender-based murders. On September 14, the Ministry of Equality confirmed 37 victims for the year following an incident in San Sebastián de los Reyes involving an 88-year-old woman. By September 28, the death toll had risen to 41. Recent high-profile cases include the murder of a 33-year-old woman in Benidorm, whose remains were discovered in suitcases in an area between Benidorm and Finestrat. Other recent fatalities were reported in Seville and Malaga. In several instances, including the Benidorm case, victims had filed no prior reports of violence. Andalusia remains the region with the highest number of victims, with 12 deaths accounting for approximately 30% of the national total, followed by the Valencian Community and Madrid. The rising death toll has also had a significant impact on minors, with 29 children orphaned due to gender-based violence in 2026. Institutional responses have included a silent tribute in the Valencian Parliament (Les Corts) and the organization of the 21st Congress on Violence against Women by the Alicante Provincial Council to address prevention and digital violence. In response to the figures, the Ministry of Equality moved its Gender Violence Crisis Committee to Seville. In early October, authorities launched new investigations into violent incidents. In Madrid, a 36-year-old man was arrested for the suspected murder of his elderly parents in the Latina district; investigators believe the suspect used a dumbbell to strike the victims. Additionally, in Ávila, the National Police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old woman struck by a car on the Sonsoles road, treating the hit-and-run as a potential case of gender-based violence.
