Overview
Women constitute a significant portion of the global agricultural workforce, estimated at approximately 40 to 43 percent. While their contributions are vital to food production and rural economies, they face persistent gender gaps regarding access to land, financing, technology, and decision-making roles. For instance, the FAO notes that while women comprise about 40 percent of the agricultural workforce, they own only 15 percent of the land.
In Mexico, efforts are underway to increase female participation in specific sectors, such as the agave production chain through the ‘Agave Responsable Social’ certification project. In Chile, rural women are increasingly integrating digital platforms and agrotourism to address generational turnover in farming. In Argentina’s Misiones province, female participation in training for yerba mate and tea production rose from 14 percent in 2021 to 41 percent in 2025.
