General Belgrano Bridge collision and damage
Overview
The General Belgrano Interprovincial Bridge, which connects the Argentine provinces of Chaco and Corrientes, sustained structural damage following a collision with the Paraguayan tugboat Tío Jan. The impact damaged a defense pontoon and pile number 5, resulting in fractured and demolished concrete that left internal reinforcement exposed.
During the incident, five barges from the tugboat’s convoy broke loose and drifted into the Paraná River, though they were later recovered and secured by the Argentine Naval Prefecture.
In response to the accident, Federal Prosecutor Melina Perborell has launched an investigation, and the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway Authority has begun an administrative inquiry. As a safety measure, authorities have implemented new navigation restrictions, reducing the permitted size for convoys passing under the bridge by half to a maximum length of 180 meters and a width of 50 meters.
