General Motors heavy-duty pickup updates
Overview
General Motors has announced several major mechanical and technological updates for its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickup trucks.
In late September 2026, the company unveiled a new 8.3-liter Duramax V8 diesel engine, codenamed ‘Mongoose’. This engine features a graphite-reinforced cast iron block and is designed to deliver 563 horsepower and 1,668 Nm of torque, significantly increasing performance and towing capacities compared to the previous 6.6-liter unit. The engine is intended to compete directly with Ford’s ‘Scorpion’ engine and is expected to debut in 2027 model year vehicles.
Alongside the engine upgrade, GM is implementing mechanical and software improvements. The heavy-duty lineup will transition from a hydraulically boosted recirculating ball steering design to a rack-and-pinion system with electric power assist to improve handling precision. Additionally, the company is launching a new in-vehicle entertainment and information system focused on human interface design, which includes visual upgrades to the Super Cruise driver-assistance system to better display detected objects like pedestrians and vehicles.
