Generalist AI introduced GEN-1.5, a robotic foundation model designed for rapid task learning through “physical prompting.” The model utilizes multimodal data—including video, language, and sensorimotor information—to allow robots to replicate actions after observing demonstrations as short as 3 to 12 seconds. In testing, the model demonstrated improvisational capabilities, such as using alternative objects to complete tasks. While the initial success rate for a single demonstration was 59%, increasing task-specific data to five minutes raised the success rate to 83%. Following the debut of GEN-1.5, Generalist AI reportedly raised $200 million in a funding round led by 8VC. This follows a previous $400 million round in June that included investors such as Nvidia Corp. and Bezos Expeditions. This recent $200 million funding extension brings the total for the current round to approximately $600 million and has propelled the company to a $3 billion valuation. Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind and Boston Dynamics researchers Peter Florence, Andy Zeng, and Andrew Barry, the startup is viewed by investors as a potential leader in achieving a “ChatGPT moment” for robotics. This refers to a stage where machines can perform a wide range of general tasks without specific training for each one. Other notable backers include Radical Ventures.
