Generational succession trends in Italian businesses

Italy is experiencing a significant generational shift within its business landscape, particularly affecting family-run and sole proprietorship sectors.

In the hospitality industry, where over 70% of structures are family-operated, businesses are navigating a transition between older generations focused on personal relationships and younger generations introducing digital tools and social media influence. Experts suggest that success depends on updating brand narratives to reach both economic decision-makers and younger influencers without losing established identities.

Broadening this trend, reports indicate a systemic risk to the Italian productive system due to a lack of generational turnover. As of mid-2025, approximately 10.7% of individual business owners are aged 70 or older, an increase from a decade prior. This aging of ownership is coupled with a shrinking pool of young successors, as youth-led businesses decreased by over 153,000 units between 2014 and 2024. This decline is linked to a broader demographic trend, including a reduction of approximately 1.4 million people in the 20 to 39 age demographic between 2015 and 2026.
