Geological and volcanic activity in Chile

Overview

Chile has experienced significant geological instability, including a massive sinkhole in the Arauco commune's Villa El Mirador sector. This event prompted the preventive evacuation of 152 families from a housing complex previously relocated after the 2010 earthquake. Authorities noted that technical reports had previously warned of unstable ground conditions in the area.

Concurrently, the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex recorded an eruptive pulse, sending a column of pyroclastic material and gases 1,540 meters into the air. Sernageomin has maintained a yellow alert level and a two-kilometer security perimeter around the emission center.

In response to volcanic risks, authorities have scheduled simulation exercises to test emergency protocols. These drills include a large-scale exercise in Pucón involving approximately 6,000 participants and a SENAPRED simulation for the Calbuco volcano covering sectors in Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. These exercises aim to review protection systems and the use of the Emergency Alert System.
