Geological erosion of Civita di Bagnoregio

Overview

Civita di Bagnoregio, an ancient Etruscan settlement in Italy’s Lazio region, faces an existential threat from geological instability. The town is situated on a volcanic tuff plateau resting on soft layers of clay and sand, making it highly susceptible to landslides, seismic activity, and continuous erosion.

This decay has caused various structures, including houses and city gates, to collapse into the Calanchi Valley over several centuries. Known as ‘la città che muore’ (the dying city), the settlement is now highly isolated, connected to the mainland only by a single reinforced concrete pedestrian bridge. While the population has dwindled to approximately 15 residents, the site remains a significant cultural landmark and is recognized as one of the 100 most endangered areas of cultural heritage globally.
