The 20th George Enescu International Competition, running 23 August–19 September 2026 in Bucharest, attracted a record 819 applicants from 55 countries, representing a 23% increase over the previous edition. Core sections (violin, cello, piano, composition) received 756 entries, while a newly expanded master-class programme involved 63 participants from 18 nations. The largest national contingents include China (152), South Korea (134), Romania (65), the United States (64), and Japan (50). The opening gala on 23 August at the Romanian Athenaeum was conducted by Cristian Măcelaru with the National Radio Orchestra. Returning laureates Mayumi Kanagawa (violin), Yo Kitamura (cello), and Roman Lopatynskyi (piano) performed alongside the new competitors. The program juxtaposed traditional repertoire with contemporary works, featuring Diego Santamaria’s award-winning “The Stone and the Ivy”, Dan Dediu’s “Brahmsodia – Triple Concerto”, and Enescu’s Symphony No. 1. For the upcoming instrumental semifinals in the cello, violin, and piano sections, the competition is introducing a first-of-its-kind “play & conduct” format. In this format, the six semifinalists in each category will perform as soloists alongside the Radio Chamber Orchestra while acting as the ensemble’s artistic leaders without a conductor. Participants will be evaluated on their ability to communicate musical vision through “gesture, gaze, and phrasing” to ensure coherence. These semifinals will be held at the Romanian Athenaeum, with cello on 5 September, violin on 11 September, and piano on 17 September. Each session includes free morning chamber music performances by George Enescu, followed by the afternoon “play & conduct” challenge. The broader cultural programme includes six symphonic concerts and chamber recitals from 4–18 September, alongside the “Duelul Tenorilor” on 14 September. Radio România Muzical will provide live broadcasts of the festival, including the opening concert and various symphonic concerts and finals.
