Lucas also discussed his departure from the “Star Wars” franchise, which he sold to Disney in 2012. He explained that while he had prepared treatments for three additional films—intended to be his versions of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX—he ultimately chose to retire to focus on the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. He described the decision to let go of the franchise as “very, very painful,” noting that at age 82, there is a limit to what he can accomplish. He expressed that he felt he was running out of time to realize the museum project. Regarding his creative legacy, Lucas defended his history of revising the original “Star Wars” trilogy. He stated that he viewed these changes as a way to “finish” the films, which he felt were often rushed into theaters due to strict deadlines, despite some fan dissatisfaction. The $1.5 billion museum project in Los Angeles features approximately 35 galleries across a 13-acre campus. The institution houses roughly 1,200 pieces from Lucas’s private collection, including sculptures, paintings, original film costumes, and vehicles. His wife, Mellody Hobson, noted his significant and exhaustive involvement in the museum’s architectural design and exhibit layout. As the franchise expands, Lucasfilm is preparing for the 50th anniversary of “Star Wars” with a comic book crossover titled ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’, scheduled for January 2027. Furthermore, a new cinematic trilogy is reportedly in development, with director Jon Watts attached to the first film.
