Georgia power blackout investigation

Entities: PGE Dystrybucja · Kłodzko County · Wielkopolska region · Podkarpackie Voivodeship · Rejon Energetyczny Bełchatów

Overview

In late July 2026 Georgia suffered two nationwide electricity outages—first after midnight on 24 July, then again at 08:00 on 25 July. The blackouts halted the Tbilisi metro, suspended railway services, affected water‑pumping stations and caused intermittent mobile‑internet and cellular network failures across major cities such as Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Kobuleti and Telavi.

The State Security Service opened a criminal investigation for possible sabotage under the Georgian Criminal Code. Authorities focused on the disconnection of the 500‑kilovolt “Imereti” transmission line from the Enguri Hydroelectric Power Plant, though the grid operator denied fault. Restoration took up to 30 hours after the first outage and about two hours after the second, while the national regulator convened an emergency meeting and granted investigators unrestricted access to energy‑sector data.

No further developments have been reported since the emergency meeting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
