Geothermal technology development in New Zealand and US

Overview

Efforts to advance geothermal technology are underway in New Zealand and the United States to improve energy security and meet climate goals. In the United States, developers are expanding beyond traditional reservoirs by utilizing closed-loop systems and artificial reservoir creation, including residential and commercial projects in New York City.

In New Zealand, research is focused on the Taupō volcanic zone through the GeoShot NZ project, which investigates supercritical geothermal energy. This involves drilling approximately 5km deep to access water at temperatures exceeding 374C.

Following these investigations, Todd Energy has been named the preferred contractor to drill New Zealand’s first exploratory superhot geothermal well near the Rotokawa field. Scheduled to begin around mid-2027, the well aims to reach depths of 5 to 6 kilometers, utilizing domestic expertise and infrastructure to manage the extreme heat and pressure associated with such depths.
