The 2026/27 German 3. Liga season began with TSV Havelse playing their opening match against VfB Stuttgart II at the Heinz von Heiden Arena in Hannover. This match, necessitated by DFB stadium requirements, drew only 750 spectators, marking the lowest attendance for a league opening matchday in 19 seasons, excluding the pandemic-restricted 2020/21 season. Following this, TSV Havelse traveled to face Rot-Weiss Essen for Essen’s home opener. Rot-Weiss Essen entered the match seeking their first points of the season after a 2-5 loss to 1. FC Saarbrücken. Ahead of the fixture, Essen coach Uwe Koschinat addressed defensive concerns and confirmed that defender Lucas Brumme would be unavailable due to ankle issues. Rot-Weiss Essen secured their first victory of the season with a 1-0 home win against TSV Havelse. The decisive goal was scored in the 64th minute by Semir Telalovic via a penalty kick. To manage the absence of Lucas Brumme, Koschinat adjusted the starting lineup, notably starting Noah Pesch in midfield. Despite heavy pressure from Essen and several missed opportunities, the defense held firm to secure the three points. Following the match, Director of Professional Football Marcus Steegmann praised the development of Ben Hüning and the integration of Max Geschwill into the starting eleven. Steegmann also addressed defensive rotations involving Max Geschwill and José-Enrique Rios Alonso.
