German aid for Ukrainian nuclear safety

Overview

Germany has committed significant financial aid to bolster nuclear safety in Ukraine. In August 2026, the German government pledged 50 million euros to repair the New Safe Confinement (NSC) structure at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This facility sustained damage in February 2025 following a Russian drone strike that created a 15-square-meter hole in the dome. German Federal Minister for the Environment Carsten Schneider inspected the site, noting that restoration works are tentatively planned for 2028 through 2030.

By September 2026, Germany announced an additional one million euros specifically intended to improve nuclear safety at Ukrainian power plants. This follows previous contributions of 7.3 million euros to support the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) presence in Ukraine. German officials continue to advocate for international support regarding the Chernobyl repairs and remain concerned about the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which remains occupied by Russian forces.
