Germany and Austria are advancing railway modernization through the deployment of battery-powered trains designed to replace diesel engines on non-electrified tracks.
In Germany, regional networks in North Hesse and the Palatinate region are initiating trial operations. In North Hesse, several transport associations have agreed to deploy vehicles that charge via overhead lines on electrified sections and use stored energy on segments without wires. In the Palatinate, the ZÖPNV Süd association is beginning the phased introduction of Stadler-manufactured FLIRT Akku trains, with passenger trials scheduled to begin on September 21, 2026, on routes including Landau to Neustadt an der Weinstraße and Pirmasens to Saarbrücken.
The transition relies on the construction of charging infrastructure, such as overhead line island systems. These new battery-electric units aim to provide increased passenger capacity, quieter operation, and modern amenities like Wi-Fi and real-time information.
