German automotive spare part price increases
Overview
Research from the German Insurance Association (GDV) indicates that automotive spare part prices in Germany have increased by more than 80 percent since 2016. Certain components, including doors, trunk lids, and rear side panels, have seen prices nearly double. This annual average increase of 5.9 percent has outpaced the general inflation rate of 2.8 percent.
GDV Managing Director Jörg Asmussen stated that rising repair costs are placing pressure on corporate fleets and increasing damage costs for insurers, which subsequently influences insurance premiums. The study identified design protection as a key driver, as it restricts independent manufacturers from providing cheaper, visually identical alternatives for exterior parts. Additional contributing factors include increasing workshop expenses and the growing complexity of vehicle technology, specifically the integration of sensors and cameras.
Recent data shows that between August 2025 and August 2026, spare part prices increased by over 4 percent. As of October 2026, GDV reports that total price increases for spare parts since 2016 have reached 82.7 percent. These rising costs have led to situations where repair expenses occasionally exceed premium income. Consequently, consumer behavior is shifting; a DAT report indicates that 58 percent of car owners have changed their service behavior, with many opting to perform maintenance themselves or utilize second-hand parts to mitigate costs. Consumers are also being advised to review motor insurance policies before the November 30 deadline to avoid being locked into higher rates.
