In late July 2026, the Bäckerei Wahl bakery chain, operating 54 locations in Brandenburg and Berlin, filed for self-administration insolvency. CEO Anett Wahl attributed the filing to sharply rising costs and reduced consumer spending. The restructuring puts more than 400 jobs at risk and involves the closure of several branches—including sites in Potsdam, Mittenwalde, Zossen, and Berlin-Schmöckwitz—effective August 1. The company's production plant in Bestensee is expected to remain operational, with legal advisers noting prospects for a turnaround. Following this, the broader German bakery market underwent significant consolidation. The newly formed BrotWert Group, which includes family-run bakeries Görtz and Pappert, expanded its portfolio by acquiring the Rhein-Main-based Bäcker Eifler. Norwegian investor FSN Capital acquired a majority stake in the acquisition, integrating the 95-location chain into the BrotWert Group. This move positions the group to operate approximately 500 branches across Northern Bavaria and the Rhein-Main and Rhein-Neckar regions, reflecting a trend of private equity firms targeting traditional craft businesses to drive scale. Despite the majority stake acquisition by FSN Capital, the Frankfurt-based Bäcker Eifler—a company founded in 1921—will continue to be led by Gerhard and Michael Eifler, with the family maintaining an ownership stake. The company employs approximately 200 people and operates 95 branches supplied from its central production site in Frankfurt-Fechenheim. Other regional players also restructured to ensure survival. Bäckerei Leifert in Gifhorn completed a self-administration restructuring, exiting insolvency to continue operating 23 profitable branches under new co-owner Karlchen’s Backstube. Similarly, the 122-year-old Karlsruhe-based Bäckerei Neff secured its future through a creditor-approved plan. Operating under the new entity Bäckerei Neff GmbH, the company will reduce its footprint from 19 locations to 11. While 140 employees will retain their positions, 30 jobs will be lost.
