German child dental health recommendations
Entities: Verbraucherzentrale Sachsen · ProDente
Overview
In early July, German dental experts warned that children’s frequent consumption of sugary and acidic drinks during the summer raises the risk of tooth decay. Citing data from the Robert Koch Institute, they highlighted that a notable share of children drink sweet beverages several times a day, and recommended water or unsweetened tea as the safest thirst‑quenchers.
Later in July, consumer‑protection groups expanded the focus from beverages to overall school‑cone contents. The Verbraucherzentrale Sachsen and the ProDente initiative advised parents to fill first‑grade school cones with non‑sweet items such as reusable water bottles, toys, stationery and healthier snack options, while encouraging coordination with grandparents to avoid duplicate gifts. They also suggested portioning sweets, using sugar‑free alternatives marked with the “Zahnmännchen” seal, and involving children in sharing treats. Both advisories aim to curb sugar intake and protect children’s dental health in Germany.
