June‑July 2026 saw major Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations across Germany despite a historic heat wave. Munich’s parade attracted up to 300,000 people; Nuremberg added water stations; Freising held its inaugural march on 11 July; and Frankfurt expected more than 10,000 participants and 150,000 visitors. Berlin’s CSD, running 23‑26 July under the motto “Haltung ist hot”, deployed about 2,200 officers and a police helicopter. On the night of 25 July, a white van drove into the crowd gathered in Tiergarten park near the Brandenburg Gate. At least one person was killed and 14‑15 others were injured, several critically. More than 40 emergency responders—including firefighters responders – including firefighters, ambulances and ambulances—were dozens of medical teams – were dispatched, and the police quickly secured the area. The parade was halted and the park evacuated. Police launched a city‑wide manhunt; the driver fled on foot after the vehicle struck a tree. Police spokesperson Florian Nath said investigators were “searching intensively for suspect persons.” Berlin mayor Kai Wegner called the incident “an attack on our free and open society,” promising swift action and support for victims. Authorities later said they are also examining the possibility of a second phase involving a weapon, though no evidence has been confirmed. The motive remains unknown, prompting heightened security measures for future public gatherings. The investigation into motive and the driver and motive remains ongoing, while heightened security continues across the city.
