In early June 2026, an explosive device was used to blow up a cigarette vending machine in Dresden, causing approximately €4,000 in damage and leaving the perpetrators unidentified. A week later, similar vandalism was reported in two other German towns: a break-in at a machine in Erbenheim and a firework-driven explosion in Durlangen, which caused roughly €3,700 in damage. By mid-July, the pattern escalated. In Fachbach, a machine was detonated and its contents stolen by suspects who fled on foot. In Georgensgmünd, criminals used a construction excavator to uproot two machines, transport them to an industrial area, and breach them with the machine’s bucket. Police arrested three suspects in the latter case, linking one to a fuel-card fraud scheme. In August, law enforcement made further arrests in the Offenburg region. In Friesenheim, a 19-year-old was detained following a machine detonation, marking the third such explosion in the Lahr area within a few days. Witnesses reported seeing a white BMW fleeing the scene with masked individuals. Authorities identified a second, 20-year-old suspect, and conducted searches of residences following warrants from the Offenburg District Court. The 19-year-old was found to be driving without a valid license and was suspected of being under the influence of drugs; both suspects were released pending legal proceedings regarding the manufacture and use of explosives. Additionally, in Offenburg, two 17-year-olds were apprehended after attempting a break-in with an angle grinder; they were found to be using a stolen motorized scooter, which they abandoned on train tracks, leading to charges of dangerous interference with rail traffic. On August 31, a new explosion occurred in Bramsche near the TuS Engter club grounds.
