German authorities in Mönchengladbach have reopened a 36-year-old cold case regarding an attempted murder in the Viersen district. The incident occurred on August 12, 1990, when an 18-year-old woman, identified as Ewa M., was attacked while walking home between Krefeld and Vorst. Investigators report that the perpetrator pulled the victim into a ditch near the entrance to Vorst, threatened her with sexual assault, and stabbed her multiple times. Although the attacker fled believing the victim was dead, she survived the attack and was later discovered by a cyclist. Authorities are currently utilizing modern forensic technology and re-evaluating existing evidence to seek new leads. The suspect was previously described as being slightly taller than 1.65 meters, speaking accent-free German, and appearing relatively inconspicuous. The investigation is being conducted as part of a public campaign titled ‘Mord verjährt nicht. Der Niederrhein erinnert sich.’ Police in North Rhine-Westphalia continue to seek new witnesses to assist in the investigation, hoping that modern forensic advancements and fresh perspectives will provide a breakthrough in the case.
