Initially, Germany’s community‑catering system was presented as a social service that delivers warm, nutritious meals to children, students, seniors and other vulnerable groups. By ensuring regular nutrition, the programme was credited with easing family pressures, supporting school concentration, promoting health among the elderly and fostering broader social inclusion.

Later, the sector faced a wave of transformation pressures. Operators reported entrenched operating structures, heavy daily workloads and limited flexibility for change during meal production. At the same time, rising quality expectations, tighter cost constraints, shortages of skilled staff, sustainability targets, digitalisation demands and evolving nutrition standards forced leaders to engage frontline employees as active participants in reform.
