German corporate engagement in China

Overview

German companies are navigating a shifting economic landscape in China, characterized by both strategic necessity and increased capital commitment.

Initial reports from the German Chambers of Commerce Worldwide Network (AHK) indicated a shrinking window for German firms to form strategic partnerships with Chinese companies. As Chinese businesses transition from production partners to global technology leaders, they are increasingly seeking collaborations to access international distribution networks and industrial expertise. Industry leaders warned that failure to act within an estimated 18-month window could result in Chinese firms seeking alternative partners.

Following these warnings, data from the German Institute for Economic Research (IW) showed that German investments in China rose to approximately 5.6 billion euros in the first half of the year, a one-third increase from the previous year. Economist Jürgen Matthes described China as a ‘fitness center’ where intense local competition prepares companies for the global stage. However, Matthes also cautioned that state subsidies and exchange rates make Chinese manufacturing artificially cheap, potentially leading to the relocation of jobs away from Germany. This trend in China occurred alongside a sharp decline in German investment in the United States, which dropped by nearly two-thirds during the same period.
