The German crime series “Tatort” is entering its 2026/27 season following a 19-week summer break. A significant update for the new season is the introduction of digital streaming options, allowing registered users to access new episodes via the ARD Mediathek two days before their scheduled Sunday evening broadcast on Das Erste. The season features various regional investigations and cast changes, including new investigator teams in Kiel and Munich and character departures in Vienna. The season kicked off on September 13 with the episode “König in Gelb,” starring Maria Furtwängler as investigator Charlotte Lindholm, who investigated a death at a dementia care facility in Kleinhude. On October 2, the episode “Explosive Mischung,” written and directed by Martin Eigler, became available for streaming on the ARD Mediathek. Set in Ludwigshafen, the SWR crime drama follows long-serving investigator Lena Odenthal and her colleague Johanna Stern as they probe a fatal ATM explosion in the city center that resulted in the death of Dennis Lohberg. The plot involves a missing cash box, a local gang leader, and a self-appointed neighborhood vigilante named Ulf Meisner. The episode is scheduled for its traditional television broadcast on Sunday, October 4, at 20:15 on Das Erste. This episode, which unfolds largely in real-time over a single evening, will also premiere simultaneously on ORF 2 in Austria. The investigation into the botched explosion focuses on Lohberg’s brother, Chris, and his ex-girlfriend, Fiona, while exploring themes of public and domestic violence. The episode highlights the longevity of Ulrike Folkerts, who has played the role of Odenthal since 1989.
