German economic investment trends

Economic data from Germany indicates complex and divergent investment trends. Earlier reports noted a slowdown in capital stock growth, with the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft observing that growth has dropped to less than 1 percent annually over the last six years, largely due to high asset depreciation rates.

More recent data shows a divergence between different types of capital. While venture capital volume for German startups reached approximately 3.4 billion euros in the second quarter of 2026—the strongest volume since mid-2022—investor sentiment has declined, evidenced by a drop in the German Venture Capital Barometer index. This high volume was driven by a few large deals, whereas the total number of funding rounds has decreased compared to 2022.

Additionally, foreign direct investment in Germany saw a significant increase in 2025, rising over 50 percent to approximately 86 billion euros. This growth was marked by a nearly 300 percent surge in investment from the United Kingdom, contrasted by a 44 percent decline in direct investment from the United States.
