In August 2026 German courts delivered two high‑profile verdicts on extremist violence. On 4 August the Hanseatisches Oberlandesgericht Hamburg sentenced seven young members and one supporter of the far‑right Letzte Verteidigungswelle to 1½–5 years, confirming the group’s status as an in‑land terrorist organisation. The convictions cover attempted murder, arson, dangerous bodily injury and alleged “pædo‑hunting” of perceived pedophiles, as well as planned attacks on asylum‑seeker homes and left‑wing facilities in Brandenburg and Thuringia. A 15‑year‑old received a suspended term; four defendants remain minors. The judgments can be appealed within a week. A day later, on On 6 August, August the Oberlandesgericht München sentenced Afghan asylum‑seeker Farhad N. to life imprisonment with a finding of special severity of guilt, making parole before 15 years unlikely. He was convicted of two murders, 23 counts of attempted murder and numerous serious injuries after deliberately ramming a Mini Cooper into a Verdi union demonstration in February 2025. The judge described the scene as a “field of debris” with victims “flung like bowling pins”. Prosecutors argued a religious motive, though no organised jihadist link was established. The defence asked that he be placed in a psychiatric facility, a request the court rejected. The vehicle travelled about 23 metres before stopping; the victims included a 37‑year‑old woman and her two‑year‑old daughter, and more than 40 people were injured, resulting in 22 counts of bodily harm, 19 of them serious. The verdict follows the federal prosecutor’s request for the maximum penalty and highlights security concerns around public gatherings such as the Munich Security Conference.
