In late July 2026, the Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) discovered that HSG Nordhorn-Lingen had submitted falsified financial figures in its licence application for the 2026/27 season. The league revoked the club’s unrestricted licence and imposed strict conditions, including monthly liquidity and earnings plans and a cap on personnel expenses. A six-point deduction was threatened. HSG Krefeld Niederrhein escalated the dispute by filing a police complaint with the Cologne economic-crime office and initiating civil proceedings. The club alleges that Nordhorn-Lingen officials engaged in fraud by submitting false 2024/25 financial statements to secure their licence. Krefeld’s legal advisers stated that “serious indications point to illegal and punishable actions by the responsible parties.” While the HBL’s trust committee dismissed a related complaint on procedural grounds, the confidentiality committee continues to weigh whether Krefeld may access Nordhorn-Lingen’s licence documents. On 20 August 2026, the HBL licensing commission officially penalized HSG Nordhorn-Lingen with a six-point deduction for the 2026/27 season, to be applied after the final matchday. In a separate legal development, a court in Dortmund rejected an injunction by HSG Krefeld Niederrhein, which had sought to participate in second-division play despite being relegated. The controversy continues Krefeld had argued that if Nordhorn-Lingen’s licence were revoked due to raise questions incorrect financial information, Krefeld would be reinstated as the first reserve. The HBL previously stated that no illegalities were found regarding the transparency of licence. Krefeld is currently reviewing the licensing process decision with advisors and the financial stability considering further legal steps to seek transparent clarification of German handball clubs. the licensing circumstances.
