German museums expand digitisation of historic artifacts

Throughout late 2026, German museums continued to expand their digital presence on the Museum-Digital platform, documenting a wide array of historical artifacts ranging from fine arts to colonial-era ephemera. Recent documentation includes fine arts and postal history, such as an 1877 etching titled ‘Zum Empfange’ by Hugo Bürkner from the Museum der Stadt Eschborn, and a postcard of Berlin from approximately 1913 or 1914 showing the Weidendammer Brücke. In mid-October, the Landesgeschichtliche Vereinigung für die Mark Brandenburg added several historical postcards, including an aerial view of Potsdamer Platz from 1915 and views of Königgrätzer Straße and Alexanderplatz. Other literary and commemorative items include a 1902 silver medallion of Katharina Elisabeth Goethe and an 1802 handwritten transcription of a poem by Clemens Brentano held by the Freies Deutsches Hochstift and Frankfurter Goethe-Museum. Architectural and funerary records include a 1606 funerary monument in Belzig, a bronze copy of the Frederick the Great monument, and a neo-Gothic building in Kaiserswerth. Craftsmanship is further represented by a highly decorated ‘Feierabendziegel’ (end-of-day roof tile) from approximately 1788 at Museum Schloss Lichtenburg. Textile history remains a prominent theme.
