Economic indicators for German industry have shown significant monthly fluctuations in both the construction and manufacturing sectors during late 2026. In July, real order intake in the main construction sector fell by 9.2% compared to June, with declines in structural engineering (8.4%) and civil engineering (10.0%). While turnover rose by 4.6% year-on-year, industry officials warned that order books are thinning. Felix Pakleppa, Managing Director of the ZDB, noted the housing market remains fragile, citing concerns that the expiration of special funding for EH-55 new builds and potential 2027 budget cuts could create a funding gap through summer 2027. August data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) initially revealed a 10.6% drop in manufacturing new orders, driven by a 61.5% plunge in the ‘other transport equipment’ sector. However, the construction sector saw a sharp reversal in August, with price-adjusted orders rising by 23.0% compared to July. This represented the highest monthly seasonal increase recorded since 1991, fueled by large-scale contracts. Within construction, civil engineering orders rose by 31.6% and structural engineering by 12.4%. On a year-on-year basis, August 2026 orders were 17.3% higher than in August 2025. Despite the manufacturing volatility, a three-month comparison for the June-August period indicates a 1.3% increase in orders compared to the previous quarter. While the August surge suggests a focus on infrastructure modernization, experts note that unusually large individual orders can cause significant monthly fluctuations, and the industry continues to face challenges including high interest rates, rising material costs, and skilled labor shortages.
