German international hockey hosting developments

Berlin has been selected as a host for the 2027 FIH Pro League field hockey matches at the Ernst-Reuter-Sportfeld. The event will feature the German national men’s and women’s teams against international opponents, with additional matches scheduled for Hamburg.

Separately, the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) is evaluating whether to return the hosting rights for the 2027 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship. This uncertainty follows a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruling that mandates the return of Russian teams to international competition, overturning a previous ban by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

DEB chairman Frank H. Lutz stated that the organization cannot guarantee the tournament will proceed as planned in Gelsenkirchen, Mannheim, and Düsseldorf. Lutz cited significant economic and security risks, noting that the inclusion of Russia would lead to “massive additional costs.” The federation is currently evaluating whether the financial burden of increased security measures is sustainable and is seeking clarity from the IIHF. Lutz also plans to meet with German political leaders to discuss potential complications, such as whether Russian athletes would be granted visas to enter the country.

The situation is further complicated by the potential for other nations to boycott the event and the impact on the existing tournament schedule. The IIHF, which is the official organizer, expressed disappointment with the CAS ruling but confirmed it would respect and implement the decision. While ticket sales for the 2027 tournament have already begun, uncertainty regarding the participant list and schedule remains high.
