German labor market employment and recruitment trends
Overview
Research into the German labor market indicates that employment biographies are frequently non-linear. An IAB study analyzing data from 1992 to 2023 found that fewer than 40 percent of employees in the middle phase of their careers (ages 35 to 49) have had only one employer, with an average of approximately 2.67 different employers. While job changes are most frequent between ages 25 and 34, the late employment phase (ages 50 to 60) remains the most stable.
Complementing these findings, recent surveys highlight generational differences in recruitment priorities. Younger recruiters (ages 18–29) prioritize practical experience (95%) over academic content (1.7%), whereas older recruiters focus more on academic qualifications or social competencies. To address these shifting career dynamics, new professional services like the ‘Zweitkarriere’ program have emerged to help experienced professionals navigate industry transitions through structured, low-risk testing and planning.
