German medical guidelines for bone-related conditions
Overview
German medical societies have released new clinical guidelines to standardize the care and diagnosis of bone-related conditions.
The German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) and the German Spine Society (DWG), in collaboration with 17 other organizations, introduced an S2k guideline for osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral fractures. This guideline provides a structured algorithm to help clinicians choose between conservative treatments, such as physiotherapy and medication, and surgical interventions for unstable fractures. The initiative aims to improve diagnostic accuracy for the approximately 400,000 spinal fractures diagnosed annually in Europe, many of which are often mistaken for non-specific back pain.
Additionally, the German Society for Implantology and the German Society for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery updated the S3 guideline regarding dental implants for patients using bone antiresorptives, such as bisphosphonates or denosumab. These updated guidelines emphasize risk-adapted planning to prevent serious complications like jaw necrosis in patients receiving treatment for osteoporosis or certain cancers.
