German messenger app usage and message overload

Overview

A survey conducted by the IT industry association Bitkom indicates that 87 percent of Germans use private messenger services such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, or Threema.

Findings show that the volume of digital communication is causing stress for many users. Approximately 72 percent of respondents report feeling overwhelmed by message volumes, a sensation that 20 percent say occurs frequently. This often results in 69 percent of users leaving messages unanswered for extended periods.

Social implications include a generational divide in stress levels, with 78 percent of users aged 65 and older feeling overwhelmed compared to 68 percent of those aged 16 to 29. While 73 percent of respondents report feeling guilt regarding delayed responses, 87 percent express understanding toward others who do not respond immediately. However, for 69 percent of respondents, extremely long response times from friends serve as a reason to terminate or let a relationship fade.
