Roadwork and maintenance projects have led to significant motorway closures in Germany, specifically affecting the A2 and the Ruhrgebiet region. In late August, the A2 motorway was fully closed between Kamener Kreuz and the Hamm exit toward Hannover to facilitate the installation of “Flüsterasphalt” (whisper asphalt). By early September, further major closures were scheduled in the Ruhrgebiet, including the A2 between Kreuz Oberhausen and Dreieck Bottrop and a two-week closure of the A40 near Bochum for bridge repairs. Long-term construction is also planned for the A40 between Straelen and Wachtendonk, expected to last until April 2029. Additionally, localized night-time closures are planned on the A4 near Cologne for technical adjustments. These highway disruptions coincide with broader transport instability. In Schleswig-Holstein, a two-day warning strike by the Verdi union has halted bus services in Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg, Neumünster, and the district of Plön, with approximately 1,800 workers demanding a 6.5 percent wage increase. In response to regional frustration, the SPD has proposed supplementary bus fleets and social or apprentice tickets. Rail travel is also facing significant long-term disruptions. Deutsche Bahn has announced major renovations on the Berlin-Lehrte route. Beginning in October, long-distance trains between Berlin and Hannover will be diverted via Braunschweig and Magdeburg, adding roughly 80 minutes to travel times. Due to delays in electrifying alternative routes, these rail disruptions are expected to persist until late 2027.
